The restoration and sustainable upgrade of a defining facade
More impressive in real life than in print. A tall facade full of small nuances: subtle reliefs, jewel-like golden lines, a hollow cornice, a noble base crowned by a glowing canopy. A facade far less flat than archival drawings might suggest. Relief takes the lead here, perhaps even all the roles. From afar, the building presents itself with a clear base and crown. Up close, the subtleties of the relief work reveal themselves: windows are grouped yet individually framed, and practical elements like sills and drip edges begin to shape the rhythm and legibility of the floors.
Progress by going back. In 1931, the original design intent became built reality, but over the decades, parts were lost. Lost, and now found again. Nearly a century later, we’re returning to where it began.
