Dwarsligger II
Renovation of a row house where transverse walls become possibilities instead of obstacles.
Someone tied a knot in the house. Between two generous rooms, everything suddenly narrows. A staircase and a toilet squeeze the available width. Efforts were made; the staircase has charm, there's even a skylight. But still, it’s a pity. Dressing it up didn’t resolve the issue.
Removing every obstacle can be a valid approach, but not always. And not here. We see merit in the current layout. Transverse walls also define zones. They allow different functions to exist side by side.
So we lean into it. The obstacle becomes the theme. The transverse walls become lighter as you move towards the garden. First they still separate rooms, but soon they only frame furniture. It doesn’t stop at the rear façade. Outside, the transverse rhythm continues, becoming a rain barrel, a bench, a façade, a shelf, a cabinet, a room.
What was once a barrier becomes a catalyst.
