Plankenvloertafel

A table that thinks it's a floor

Read moreRead less

Tables are there for –like decency has it- not having to eat off the floor. If we don’t want to get down on the floor, the table will bring up the floor to us. But on legs. If a lot of people gather around that table, it keeps getting bigger, until that table becomes a patch of floor. On legs.

A wooden boarded floor that gathers all the weight and leads it away to his legs, his outer points. First you have the longitudinal beams, those are sturdy large, you can even see them in the upper surface. And in the other direction the transversal beams, less tall, so you can place boards between the long beams. Completely out of plywood; nice pattern and also sustainable. A table to eat off the floor.

The (not so) secret at the bottom: a structure of primary and secondary multiplex beams make sure it is strong enough. Like an old boarded floor. A deconstructivist drawing.

The corner shows what is going on. One beam is bigger than the other. In the corner, in between, a leg that is also a corner. Wing nuts allow swift assembly or disassembly.

The upper planks lay on top of some beams and between others.
