Frugality is an attitude rooted in gratitude. It speaks of appreciation, of care for what is already there. It's not about quantity but quality; about tending, mending and reusing. Frugality becomes a form of richness, detached from any pejorative sense of the word. More than an economic strategy, it's a way of thinking, a mindset. Starting from a blank canvas isn't always the most interesting option. Not for your mind, not for your wallet, not for the planet.

Some things are off, but enough is right. We begin by keeping as much as possible. We strip things back, shuffle a few elements around. The ceiling is dismantled to reclaim height. The existing structure is painted, but otherwise left bare. The rough openings to the garden stay, but larger windows would be welcome. So the windows exceed the openings. They sit on top. Not arbitrarily, but so their sliding parts can move past the solid wall. The same amount of joinery, but more of it opens. The window becomes a hybrid. The fixed parts turn into plaster. The profiles adopt the drawing of the façade and claim their own presence. They become eaves and canopy.

Not daring for the sake of daring, but because it simply makes sense. Frugality in full form; thrift at its most exuberant.
