The organisation of a compact physiotherapy practice using two dual-purpose pieces of furniture
Let it count for two. Because when space is limited, it’s best to make things do double duty. A compact physio practice still needs all the components a larger one would have: a place to wait, to train, to talk, to treat, to store. We search for the smallest possible intervention that still gets the job done. It feels like a balancing act, just as a physio might prescribe: to divide and organise, while keeping everything as open as possible.
As you enter, you encounter the first move: a bench-cabinet. Here, you can wait a moment, turned away from the exercise area. That way, no one feels watched. On the back, there’s storage for weights and balls. The backrest rises a little higher, turning the piece into a subtle room divider.
Further in is the second move: a wall-cabinet. A thickened glass wall separates the exercise space from the treatment room. Loud from soft; groan from whisper, dumbbell from needle. Light filters through, but sight does not. The wall has depth, and its thickness alternates directionally. Things can be stored within: plants and books, an aerobics LP and a small workspace.
